Now this is what I’m talking about. I’ve just started writing a new column called The Weekly Creepy and as I was in the midst of preparing the first week’s review (up later today) this trailer surfaced. And this is the kind of thing I want to see when I go to a Gothic thriller; lots of dimly lit hospital corridors, gloomy gray skys, bodies dangling over cliffs and of course, crazy people that look like they might bite you. It’s been awhile since Scorsese has done a movie like this. In fact, I think it’s safe to say the last time was probably 1992’s Cape Fear remake. This one looks heaps better than that one, although there is no DeNiro to be seen.
Based off the novel by Dennis LeHane (Mystic River), and described by its author as The Bronte sisters meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Shutter Island looks like a classic creep-show mystery with plenty of great actors showing up along the way. Kingsley, Sydow and Clarkson are all perfectly suited for this one and it’s nice to know they have Scorsese leading them instead of some two-bit schlockmeister. One of the cast members, Emily Mortimer doesn’t even appear in this glimpse so I assume there are some surprises surrounding that. She plays the murderess referred to several times during the trailer.
The cinematography looks terrific and if nothing else Scorsese has captured the feel of a pulpy potboiler with that Wuthering Heights sense of isolation and insanity. I don’t know much about the story, but based on this trailer alone Shutter Island has just jumped onto my most anticipated list for the fall.
