Mark Ruffalo will appear opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese's upcoming drama Shutter Island – which will be released by Paramount and Columbia.
Although a final contract has yet to be signed, Ruffalo will join Scorsese and DiCaprio when the film starts shooting in March. It is being produced by Phoenix Pictures, Scorsese's Sikelia Prods. and DiCaprio's Appian Way. Scorsese is also scheduled to handle producing duties with Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In addition to supervising production of the film, Paramount is scheduled to handle
North American distribution. Columbia is set to handle international distribution. The film’s screenplay (which is an adaptation of Dennis Lehane's 2004 novel) was written by Laeta Kalogridis.
In the film, Ruffalo will take the role of U.S. Marshal Chuck Aule - who travels with his new partner (DiCaprio) to the Massachusetts island in 1954 to investigate the disappearance of a patient from a hospital for the criminally insane. As the investigation unfolds, the two are trapped on the island, encounter lies, a hurricane and an inmate riot.
