I’ve said it before, and I’ll keep saying it until I read a novel that ousts this one: Dennis Lehane’s Shutter Island is an absolute dynamite read, easily my favorite novel as of now, with many close behind it (Jack Ketchum’s The Lost a near second), yet still leading the pack. Not only is it written flawlessly, but the twists, while far from unique, worked me over and the permeating sense of paranoia and dread forced me to finish the thing within two and a half days, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to catch any precious Zs at night. I needed to know what was going to happen to my man US marshal Teddy Daniels.
So imagine my feverish excitement at the fact that Martin Scorcese has directed a film adaptation, starring Leonardo Dicaprio, Ben Kingsley, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams, and Jackie Earle Haley. Set for an October 9 release, Scorcese’s Shutter Island is still my most anticipated movie of ‘09. If Marty and company are able to effectively translate Lehane’s brutally-bleak Twilight Zone/mind-fucker of a novel to the screen, we’re going to have a feast of borderline-supernatural goodness.
Lo and behold, the film’s first trailer has made its way online today. The verdict, after watching it a solid five times in the last 20 minutes……I’m quite pleased. Scratch that—-I’m giddy
My only concern: this trailer does show a lot of what’s going on. Why is Hollywood so hellbent on revealing the bulk of a film’s surprises in the goddamn trailer?! Really grinds my gears. Hopefully people won’t be able to discern too much from this preview….
